Remember the tortoise running his famous race against the hare?  (Were you lucky like I was, to have parents who read Aesop’s Fables to you too?)  Well, the turtle wasn’t fast and flashy like the rabbit, but he was happily and contentedly dedicated to his goal of reaching the finish line.

Life in a family is much like running that race: Slow and steady wins it. Not because we’re boring or unmotivated to do the many other things that capture our interests, but because caring for a family requires our constancy.

It’s just how we were created. We just need constant nourishment, regular sleep, companionship and love. At birth our young are 100% dependent on us. (So this is what our parents experienced raising us!) Children need emotional attachment as much as they need food and giving them our presence and attention to build those attachments requires our time.

I mention this because some days, especially in January, life can feel so monotonous!

It is at times a steady dance of waking, sleeping, cooking, cleaning, changing, reading, cleaning, consoling, waking, sleeping, cooking, cleaning……yes, you young mothers know exactly what a reality this rhythm is!

Just wanted to let you know that I understand where you are and I applaud you for the great work you are doing!  And if you might be having a string of monotonous feeling days or months, this post is for you.  May I remind you that your presence in your family is irreplaceable?

That said, life is a long time.  There will be other days, other pursuits, other, probably more care-free times to come.  But there is no calling back the days you have now.  The privilege of being part of the creation of a family is priceless and worth the effort it takes to become more patient, more content in the present and more in love with those you serve.

One of the tricks to staying steady is to renew yourself regularly.  If, no when, you need a break, ask for some help from trusted friends or family. Use your  “time off” to rejuvenate yourself.  Sit in the sun.  Meditate.  Pray. Breathe deeply. Count every blessing no matter how small.  Get your spirit in a place of gratitude, commune with God, and you will be renewed and ready to get back to work!

ccblog2And when you are back, remember Mother Teresa’s teaching to,

Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting. Always have a cheerful smile. Don’t only give your care, but give your heart as well.”

I wish you a joyous, hopeful, faith-filled January day!

You’re doing just fine.

Love,

Jacque
